Why Do Photographers Need Insurance?

Almost every business should consider public liability insurance. Whether you’re a contractor working on third-party properties or a small business owner dealing with customers, it protects against unexpected claims.
Some key sectors that benefit from public liability insurance include:

  • Tradespeople
  • Freelancers
  • Consultants
  • Couriers

Without liability insurance, even minor incidents, like damaging a client’s property, could lead to costly claims and legal fees, putting your business at financial risk. Protect your livelihood and reputation with the right coverage for your needs.

Managing Risks in Creative Work
Photography may not seem high-risk, but whether you’re shooting on location, in a studio, or at events, things can go wrong. Without insurance, photographers risk:

  • Accidental damage to expensive camera gear, lighting, or props.

  • Injury to clients or the public during a shoot.

  • Loss of photos or data leading to client disputes or legal action.

Protecting Your Business and Reputation
A single mistake, like lost files, a trip hazard, or broken kit, could cost you thousands in compensation or replacement costs. Photographers' insurance helps cover these expenses, so you can keep focusing on your craft without financial stress.

Employers’ Liability Insurance – A Legal Obligation
If you employ anyone – even part-time or freelance assistants – you’re legally required to hold employers’ liability insurance. It covers claims for work-related injuries or illness.

Client Requirements and Contracts
Many venues, agencies, and corporate clients will require you to have public liability insurance before hiring you. It shows professionalism and ensures you're covered if someone is injured or property is damaged during a shoot.

Do Freelance or Self-Employed Photographers Need Insurance?
It’s not a legal requirement – but public liability and professional indemnity insurance are strongly advised. They help protect you from claims of injury, property damage, or disputes over your work.
